The second annual Big Creek - Two Ways in a Day time trail was yesterday and they saw a great turn out. RAMBO, the Roswell Alpharetta Mountain Biking Organization (division of SORBA), puts on this event at the Big Creek mountain biking part in Roswell, GA. The route is outlined on mtbtrailreview.com under Big Creek. Here are some pictures that I took, but as the rest come in...I'll post those up as well along with the results.

Cannondale brought out their demo trailer to show off some new rides. A few guys even raced them. I got to get my hands on a new Rize and was surprised to see all of them with QR Fox forks. All of the preliminary shots showed these bikes with a Lefty installed. I have to say, I was glad to see the Fox forks instead of the Lefty.

Local riding legend, Bobg, took care of the time recording duties and it was off to the races.
I got to the event late and only ran one lap. My time was 24 minutes and 20 seconds. I was extremely happy with this for several reasons.

  • My warm up was the ride from the truck to the starting line. This basically means I hit a sub 30 minute race with cold legs, lungs and not prepared.
  • The bike had never seen dirt before...so this was the break in ride. I was on Ham's new Ibis Mojo, and this ended up being its "break in" run.
  • I am really out of shape. Too much time working and in front of a computer lately...I really need to get to riding more.
  • I haven't ridden a sub 30 lbs bike in awhile (several months). The steeper geometry still really has me a little sketchy...

The winner had a time somewhere in the mid to low 19's and most of the really fast guys were ranging in the 20-high 22's, so my 24.20 with all of that stuff going on wasn't half bad.

The bike got me that time basically. There will be a full out review after I really put it through some paces today, but that bike climbs like a mountain goat. I felt like I was flying up the hills. It was also pretty good on the downs thanks to it being Push'd on both ends. It will take a couple of rides to get used to the more cross-countryish geometry (I know what most of you are thinking right now...xc? it has a 140mm Pike on it!).

The component list also helps the bike out a lot....full '08 SRAM X.0, Hope M4's with braided lines, Push'd RP23 and Pike, carbon bits galore, Industry Nine's on Stan's Flow rims, XTR cranks and FD....the list goes on and on...

Great job RAMBO on getting this together for the 2nd consecutive year...maybe I'll be in better shape for the next one!

I'll continue to update this post as the information comes in...stay tuned...

    Some data for the masses:

    We had 47 participants
The breakdown was 2 women, 8 in single speed division, 7 in men under 30 division and 29 participants in the men over 30. 4 of the 8 in single speed were also in a geared division.

There were grand total of 86 laps raced.

Fastest time of any category was Artur Sagat with a 19:47 in the tues, thurs, sat direction with “gears”. The previous single lap record (either direction) from Thomas Turner of 19:46 still stands. (ouch…that 1 sec has gotta hurt!)

20:23 was fastest single speed time in sun, mon, wed, fri direction 20:30 was fastest single speed time in tues, thurs, sat direction

20:34 was fastest geared +30 time in sun, mon, wed, fri direction 20:45 was fastest geared +30 time in tues, thurs, sat direction

most laps by 1 person was Neal Nichols with 6 laps, only other person to do 6 laps was Greg Turner in previous event (nice company Neal!). Next most laps this event was 5 laps by Mike Carter from the Apto Solutions team 2 other Apto team guys (tom Watson & Jeff Jones) also did 4 laps, 2 in gears and 2 in SS division. Greg Schisla (farmerG) also did 4 laps, 2 in gears and 2 in SS division.
